Hello,

I believe it’s so important for us to share with each other why we are so passionate for what we do as a profession. I find it very interesting and inspiring to read other professional’s Philosophy Statements in the field of AfterSchool Programs. I thought it would be interesting over time to see different people post their statements in this blog. Here is mine:

Thank you for reading my statement. I would like to share my philosophy as a school age child care professional. Over the past 18 years I have become a leader who embraces school age child care as an opportunity to inspire and empower children. I believe that every child is a unique individual whose ideas, interests and skills flourish in a quality educational system. My goal has always been to enhance every opportunity for all students to reach their full potential. Ideally, I want children to feel personally changed by their participation in the quality child care program I am providing. In my experience of working with children, I believe it has always been my responsibility to provide responsive and understanding care to children through providing responsible guidance, modeling integrity, generosity and sincerely caring about them. I believe in providing children with support, safe environments, professional and developmentally appropriate practices. As a child care provider, I continue to promote an understanding that effective programs respond to the needs of the child, family and community. Child care programs must have a variety of activities, recreation and relaxation. Effective programs create a warm and supportive environment where each child is encouraged to reach their full potential. Appropriate practices must be developed that expose children to a variety of situations that foster problem-solving skills, social-emotional competency, positive social interactions with peers and valuable life skills that prepare them for the future.

Parent commutation is imperative and the competence in my technique of delivery is critical in bringing resolve to concerns and situations. I believe the most important quality above all is integrity. Integrity precedes all other things. Parents must be convinced of my integrity through my commitment not mere gestures. I believe in being accountable and the importance of making promises to people and carrying them out. I believe in making a decision based on my beliefs and values. In decision making situations, my promises mean absolutely nothing if others see discrepancies in my value system. I believe I am a leader who thinks profoundly and broadly, and have developed an inner voice that understands my own belief system.

Collaboration is the key to effective partnerships and asking others to offer suggestions is the way to always think in terms of discovery. I am fragile precisely at the point of my strengths. When I push my own abilities outside my comfort zone, true vulnerability exists. Therefore I believe in collaboration and asking for help when my ability to work out a situation is beyond my techniques. Organizations have many talented employees that are not allowed to work above their potential. I believe that employees who are not allowed to make mistakes and are never allowed to contribute or produce and are dominated by their leaders will never exceed the talents of that leader. Employees must know they are valued, respected, talented and beneficial to the group. The organization environment must be created in which all employees are able to pursue their full potential.

Getting the best results out of an employee requires the leader to clearly state the organization vision. The vision must be fully shared, discussed and scrutinized. Employees must understand and accept to follow the vision. Once this is achieved, leaders now have the ability to delegate to a team. This is achieved through trust that begins at the top in accordance with their beliefs. Effective delegation is the pinnacle of a highly effective leader. The leader has to be ready first, before this will ever evolve. I believe the performance of the group is the only real proof of leadership. A leader must facilitate decision making by having the acquired understanding to empathize with others. The empathy displayed prompts people to feel accepted and recognized within their department.

Effective leaders are aware of patterns through hands on supervision and intervene with other people’s highest priority needs being served before their own. I feel it is important to be aware of all employees and understand the big picture. More importantly, I am aware of my own self. I believe self-awareness is the strength of an effective leader, especially for a leader in an integrated position within a department. I believe it is important to be aware of the established culture within a department, but more interested in each individual. Employees want to know where everyone came from, how they were created. I believe in effectively communicating to employees and assure their sustenance as a human first and an employee second. Members of the team must see a sincere effort from their leader in acknowledging each other’s point of view with open and honest communication. I am a leader that will ensure employees are promoting good communication, decision making, conflict resolution and effective interpersonal team relations. A goal of an effective leader it is to be sure that all information within the team is available to each other in a timely manner, meeting times are planned where team members can speak with each other around scheduled agendas, and all previous communication records are available for team members to refer back to if desired. Effective interpersonal relations are cohesive, productive and team orientated. I believe in building trust in the employees and panning change with new and emerging intervention strategies which are constantly being introduced to the department.

Finally, appropriate use of power is needed to respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities identified in many areas of employee supervision. To effectively supervise, it begins with the end in mind. I believe it is essential to establish trust, mutually shared values, and emerge as a trustworthy professional. I effectively seek the understanding of each individual, aware of ethics and value the relationships with others. My goal is to lead a productive organization with open and free communication with each other. I seek out strategies which will focus on the strengths and opportunities of employees, rather than focusing on weaknesses and threats. I look towards a collaborative decision based on consistency, purpose and principles. I continue to strive for a vision that includes input from all employees which in turn will build healthier and longer lasting relationships.

Thanks for reading, now post yours!
