They said it would be the hardest job I’d ever love. They were right…and now I can't turn back!
With the start of year three only days away, the nervous excitement recalls memories from my college football days. All those hours in the weight room, late nights working (out), sacrificing the common joys of life, in wait of the start of the season. Even on a weekend night, when most college students were out “making their parents proud,” the anxiety of the first whistle, first play call, first high speed collision with the opponent, was so high no party or (keg size) could calm me.
Tonight, Monday, August 10th, 2009 my stomach churns yet again from the familiar but distant emotion of awaiting another one of life’s big events. It’s the start of the 2009-10 school year and the third year of the chapter in my life I’m fondly titling, “the afterschool years.” And just like my first two years as a college football player, I haven’t exactly been entirely proud of my play. Knowing what I know now I can’t help but think I could have worked harder (or smarter), could have made better decisions, could have done some things differently and as a result be in much better contention for a successful junior season (in after-school).
However, that being said I’m reminded of what my old college coach used to tell me, “Escobar if you’ve done what’s in your power to prepare, you will compete. I can’t promise you will win every time, but I can promise you will walk off the field proud knowing you gave it your all. And that’s all anyone can ask of themselves.” So, to all my fellow after-school teammates I wish you the best after-school season ever. But more importantly I wish you to be proud of the valiant work you have chosen to be committed. And whether this is your freshman season or you’re a 5th year senior in after-school, play the game with passion, leave it all out on the field and don’t forget to rely on your teammates (like me)!
Activate. Educate. Elevate.
